CLEVELAND, Miss. \u2014 <\/strong>Delta State University reported substantial improvements in its financial position and provided updates on enrollment, legislative matters and campus priorities during its Fall Town Hall on Sept. 9.<\/p>\n

The university ended fiscal year 2026 with 94 days of cash on hand, surpassing the 90-day goal established as part of a multiyear financial plan introduced in 2023. Delta State had 24 days of cash on hand in fiscal year 2023 before increasing to 27 days in 2024 and 58 days in 2025.<\/p>\n

The increase represents a gain of 70 days of cash on hand over three fiscal years and gives the university a stronger reserve to manage unexpected expenses and changes in revenue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThree years ago, we established a financial plan that relied on realistic revenue projections, responsible budgeting and steady progress toward a sustainable financial position,\u201d said Delta State President Dr. Daniel J. Ennis. \u201cReaching 94 days of cash on hand reflects the difficult decisions and disciplined work that have taken place across the university. Our faculty and staff have remained focused on serving our students while helping Delta State build a more secure foundation for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Delta State also reported substantial improvement in its debt coverage ratio, which measures the university\u2019s ability to meet its annual debt obligations. The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning requires universities to maintain a ratio of at least 1.50. Delta State\u2019s ratio increased from 0.93 in 2023 to 11.73 in 2026, compared with a median ratio across U. S. higher learning institutions of 3.20.<\/p>\n

The university\u2019s financial plan includes a contingency of 3% to 5% in the budget at the beginning of each fiscal year. The contingency does not represent cash left over after annual expenses. Under the plan, available contingency funds have been directed toward improving the university\u2019s cash position until Delta State reached at least 90 days of cash on hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese results show that Delta State is in a much stronger position than it was three years ago, but they do not mean our work is finished,\u201d Ennis said. \u201cWe must continue to budget carefully, strengthen enrollment and make thoughtful investments in the programs and facilities that serve our students. The progress we have made gives us greater stability as we address those priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ennis emphasized that, as Delta State moves forward, university leaders will continue monitoring enrollment, state funding and other factors that affect the institution\u2019s financial outlook.
